Role/Position:

Due to the success and growth of the Environment Department, our portfolio of projects in Ireland and the UK has increased greatly. Nicholas O’Dwyer Ltd. wish to capitalise on this success and build on our ambition by expanding our Dublin based Team.

We are currently seeking a highly experienced, enthusiastic and competent Principal Ecologist with at least 10 years post graduate consultancy/public sector experience to join our Environmental Team. The successful applicant will be working as an integral member of our Environmental Team, based in our Dublin office and will support the expansion of our ecological and environmental services in Ireland and the UK.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will, amongst other things, be responsible for:

  • Managing individual contracts, in order to deliver high quality ecological consultancy services within budget and to meet deadlines;
  • Providing expert ecological input for a range of projects;
  • Planning and conducting site ecological surveys and fieldwork;
  • Preparing and monitoring of the implementation of Construction Environmental Management Plans and undertaking the role of Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW);
  • Undertaking Appropriate Assessments and the preparation of Screening for Appropriate Assessment reports and Natura Impact Statements;
  • Undertaking Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), Biodiversity Chapters for Environmental Impact Assessment Reports (EIARs) and other environmental reporting requirements;
  • Performing other duties in relation to general environmental consultancy & provide day-to-day support to the wider Environment and Engineering Teams, as required;
  • Writing of technical reports and other deliverables;
  • Technical peer review of wider team members’ reports and deliverables;
  • Managing Quality Assurance, including, but not limited to, attention to detail and accuracy, delivery of contracts on time and to the highest possible standards, and continue to strive to improve the quality of work produced by the Ecology Team;
  • Preparing tender bids;
  • Providing expert witness at Oral Hearings, as required;
  • Developing excellent relationships with clients and attending meetings with clients and design teams when necessary;
  • Developing new business and work streams for the company based on your own particular skills and contacts.

Qualifications and Experience Required:

We are looking for a Candidate with the following knowledge and experience:

  • A postgraduate degree in ecology or related subject;
  • A minimum of 10 years relevant work experience in environmental and planning consultancy;
  • Full Membership of CIEEM or equivalent;
  • Specialist experience in aquatic and wetland ecology, with a competence for terrestrial ecology;
  • Excellent ecological field work skills;
  • Experienced in the oral hearing process and in the role of expert witness;
  • Detailed knowledge of wildlife and conservation legislation, within Ireland and the UK, including the Habitats Directive and Wildlife Acts;
  • Knowledge and awareness of planning process and policy;
  • Excellent technical report writing skills;
  • Experienced in the preparation and monitoring of the implementation of Construction Environmental Management Plans;
  • Experienced in working in multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Exceptional organisational and project management skills;
  • A positive and enthusiastic attitude, willing and able to motivate others;
  • A self-motivated, pragmatic, solution driven and flexible approach with a willingness to actively participate as part of a wider multidisciplinary team;
  • A full clean driver’s licence.
