FORUM Connemara CLG is a locally led development company based in Connemara. It has been selected by the Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, to implement a new €1.42 million European Innovation Partnership for Agriculture Productivity and Sustainability (EIP-Agri). The name of the Project is the North Connemara Locally Led Agri-Environmental Scheme.

The project aims to support farmers in farming the Maum Turks and Twelve Bens Special areas of Conservation, through the implementation of various actions and measures. Working closely with farmers in the catchment, the results based scheme will reward sustainable agricultural practices which enhance the important habitats in the area.

The company now wish to recruit a Project Ecologist with an Ecological and Agri-environmental background based in the FORUM head office Letterfrack Co. Galway. The successful applicant will work as a key member of the project team and will report to the Project Manager/CEO.

Main duties

  • Design and deliver the Ecological elements of habitat conservation and improvement plans in the catchment area.
  • Evaluate participating farms and co-design detailed farm plans in relation to grazing/biodiversity management/water quality/scrub removal.
  • Negotiate and facilitate the implementation of results-based ecological measures on farms.
  • Contribute toward monitoring and evaluating the success of the project through baseline data collection, continued on-site monitoring, and the input and analysis of data.

Essential criteria

  • An honours degree in ecology/environmental science or a relevant postgraduate qualification.
  • Three years’ experience in the evaluation of upland based habitats.
  • Experience of high nature value farming and current farming practices.
  • Experience in the monitoring of biological, physical and chemical indicators of environmental quality and/or ecological status.
  • Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively and efficiently with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Skilled in the collection, input, management, of high-quality data.
  • Excellent administrative, reporting and IT skills.
  • Full clean driving license.
