The Hen Harrier Project Ltd are administering the operation of the Hen Harrier Locally Led Agri Environment Scheme on behalf of the Dept. of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. This work is being carried out in partnership with the Golden Eagle Trust and Brendan O Gorman (Accountants). In connection with this we have a requirement to fill an additional Project Officer position.

Specification

Minimum qualifications: B.Ag. Sc or B.Sc. in Botany, Ecology, Environmental Science, Zoology or a related field. A post-graduate qualification or significant experience in the areas of Agri-Environment Advisory Services (including FAS registration), in Raptor Ecology or in High Nature Value Farmland Research would be a distinct advantage.

Experience: A full driving licence is required. Experience in GIS or desk top publishing (advantageous), Habitat Mapping and Habitat identification skills are a requirement. Experience in Community Outreach or engagement would be advantageous.

Contract: The position will be full time and will run for 2 years. The contract may be extended subject to project requirements.

Location: The Post will initially be based in West Limerick, following an initial training period in Oranmore, Co. Galway.

Job description: 

The successful applicant will provide support to participating farmers in the Mullaghanish to Musheramore Mountains Special Protection Area and in the Stack’s to Mullaghareirk Mountains, West Limerick Hills and Mount Eagle Special Protection Area. The work will entail:

  • Supporting participants and advisors in enhancing habitat quality on participating farms.
  • Running training courses for farmers and agricultural contractors.
  • Liaison with Local Authorities in respect of screening for Appropriate Assessment on behalf of participating farmers.
  • Liaison with Fire Services and Forestry interests in respect of planned controlled burning operations.
  • Assisting the Golden Eagle Trust with the monitoring of Hen Harrier populations across the SPA network.
  • Developing Community wide engagement with the project through working with Businesses, Schools, Gun Clubs, cultural and sporting groups and others.
  • Assisting in the monitoring of predators that may pose a threat to Hen Harrier breeding success.
  • Assisting the Project Manager with the verification of payment claims made by participants. This work could take place in any of the six Special Protection Areas.

The Person:

The successful applicant will be a self-starter capable of working independently as part of a larger team, they will have to have the use of a car for work purposes (mileage will be paid). As the job will entail a significant amount of fieldwork, the successful applicant must be able and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions. The post entails very significant responsibilities that impact on farmer’s incomes and on the building of trust between the Project and the Community. The successful applicant must demonstrate a determination to build support locally for conservation through agriculture and to maintain the highest professional standards.
