Job Type: Full-time (5 days per week)
Duration: 6-month fixed-term contract (April to October 2024)
Salary: In line with skills and experience

About FitzGerald Ecology:

At FitzGerald Ecology, we are passionate about contributing to real conservation action and promoting sustainable development in the Republic of Ireland and farther afield. As one of the highest quality botanical and ecological consultancy practices in Ireland, we work with a variety of clients including county councils, National Parks and Wildlife Service, BEC Ltd. and Bord na Móna, amongst others. We are looking for a Seasonal Consultant Ecologist to join our team for the spring-autumn 2024 season.

Job Description:

As a Seasonal Consultant Ecologist, you will be responsible for conducting and shadowing colleagues on habitat, flora, fauna and other ecological surveys throughout the island of Ireland. You will also be involved in QGIS mapping, report writing, and other tasks that contribute to the success of the business. In this role, you will interact with clients, landowners, and team members, and may need to travel and stay overnight on fieldwork depending on the project location. You may be required to liaise with clients, landowners, statutory bodies, county councils, sub-consultants and other persons relevant to our projects. You will work closely with the Director to maintain our reputation and standards and communicate about any issues or challenges which arise within the projects and tasks.

The Ideal Candidate:

To be considered for this role, you must have a certified qualification in natural science, ecology, or a related biological discipline, or at least be in the course of studying for such a qualification. We do not believe in the stress, time consumption and environmental waste of office commuting at FitzGerald Ecology, so you must be happy to work from home full time when not on fieldwork. Freedom from micro-management is generally afforded to the successful candidate, rather your performance will be judged based on your results produced. You should have some experience in field working or similar outdoor survey conditions, and be able to work well in a team and also when alone and unsupervised. You should have a full driving licence and access to a car, and be available to travel throughout Ireland and stay overnight away from home during work days. Excellent communication, organisational and time management skills are essential, as is a flexible and friendly attitude.

We would love to see one or more years’ professional experience in ecological consultancy, as well as prior habitat recording/mapping and botanical experience, or other specialist ecological surveying experience. Membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) would also be desirable, as would membership in other ecological charities and volunteer groups, e.g. Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, Dublin Naturalists’ Field Club, BirdWatch Ireland, etc.

Opportunities:

You will have the opportunity to be trained up on various aspects of ecological surveying and reporting, and to join a small but growing, modern and adaptive business in a burgeoning field. Depending on the successful candidate’s level of performance and growth in the role, they may have the opportunity to be offered a full-time permanent position within FitzGerald Ecology once the fixed term contract has expired.

Application:

Applications should be sent with your CV to afitzgerald@fitzgeraldecology.ie. Online interviews will be held at a time suitable for both parties.
