Scott Cawley Ltd is an ecological consultancy, providing ecological surveying and impact assessment services to the planning and development-related sectors.   You can find out more about us at  Our current team of 12 includes two directors, three senior ecologists, six additional ecologists and an office administrator.

The Role

We are looking to fill two temporary full-time positions, primarily to assist with field work between June and September.  The focus of the work will be on field surveying (mainly bat and breeding bird surveys), data analysis and collation following field work, writing up of results and preparing digital mapping.  In-house training in breeding bird surveys, the use of bat equipment and software for analysing bat calls, and GIS software will be provided, however candidates that have any experience in breeding bird or bat surveys or in use of GIS software will be preferred.

Depending on the nature and volume of the company’s work over the summer, the role may additionally involve assisting our team of ecologists in a range of tasks including shadowing or assisting with ecological surveys, desktop data studies, preparing digital maps, drafting and/or contributing to ecological impact and Appropriate Assessment reports.

While the main focus will be on ecology, there may also be an occasional requirement to input into a range of other areas such as assisting in researching and preparing fee quotations and conducting routine office administrative duties.

The Terms

Candidates should be willing and available for night work.  Given the focus of the work will be bats and breeding birds, much of the work will be at night or early morning.  Time in lieu will be offered to recover from night work in accordance with the company’s policy and the work schedule will be managed to balance night work with day work.

The work may be at locations around the island of Ireland and candidates should be prepared to travel and where necessary spend nights away from home, have a full driving licence and ideally have use of a car.

The salary offered for the summer position will be pro rata equivalent of an annual salary of €25,000.
