Technical Assistant (Freshwater Biologist) for the LIFE + Programme

Location: James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket, Co. Cork

IRD Duhallow is a Local Development Company that provides communities, individuals and businesses in North and South Cork/East Kerry with a broad range of supports. IRD Duhallow is recruiting a fixed term (12 months) Technical Assistant on the RaptorLIFE programme. RaptorLIFE is a four year LIFE+ project (2015 to mid 2019) for nature and the environment, part-funded through the European Union. The project is aimed at working with local communities and landowners to better manage upland and freshwater habitats for the conservation of key Annex 1 species. The project area covers two adjoining Natura 2000 sites: the Stacks to Mullaghareirks SPA and the Blackwater SAC.

Job Specification

The Technical Assistant will report to the Project Manager. The role of the Technical Assistant will be to propose, perform and/or supervise actions as laid out in our approved Project Plan. This will include having to monitor, collect, input and analyse data within the scope of the LIFE project; establish baselines to inform progress throughout their contract on the project and ensure consistency in work and assessments. The person will be required to work with GIS mapping applications (ArcGIS) and also to coordinate and update information on the project website. The successful candidate will liaise with stakeholders and propose, give/assist with workshops, presentations and educational lectures in relation to all scientific aspects of the project to IRD Duhallow’s Working Groups and Communities. The Technical Assistant will produce written reports on the work of the project to the Project Manager and Assist the Project Scientist in producing Official Reports for the European Commission and its Monitors.

Person Specification

A relevant Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences with  Master’s degree desirable
